Misheard lyrics

Have you ever heard a song on the radio and thought you heard one set of lyrics, but later found out you were wrong? It’s something that happens to a lot of people - enough that there are even whole websites dedicated to answering the question “What were those lyrics again?”.

It’s happening in our household, too. I shouldn’t be surprised, it’s been happening to me for as long as I can remember. But now it’s happening to Sarah, too.

Last week we were riding around in the truck with my in-laws and Sarah was trying to sing the chorus to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies”. I don’t listen to Beyonce, but that song was featured on Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel, so she’s heard it a couple of times. However, instead of singing “All the single ladies”, she kept singing “I’m a cigarette” over and over. Eek!

This evening we were out in the yard and she was singing the Christian song “Sing Praise”. It took me a minute to realize what she was singing, though. Her lyrics completely threw me! It went something like this:

Sarah singing: “Slamming doors forever. Sing praise! Sing praise!”

Me: Shaking with uncontrollable (yet silent) laughter as I realize she means “His love endures forever. Sing praise! Sing praise!”

A day at the Coast

I would say the Oregon Coast, but technically we were in California today. We went with some good friends to spend a beautiful Sabbath day on the beach with a picnic lunch. What a great way to spend the Sabbath, and Hannah’s 7th birthday!

This looks like a lot of fun! I found out about it through a couple of my homeschool friends. It’s the 10th Annual Million Minute Challenge.

Basically, families (or groups of friends) sign up to commit to playing a board game for at least 20 minutes between September 1 and December 31, 2010. Now come on, you could spend 20 minutes playing a game with your friends or family, right? It wouldn’t even take you the whole 4 months to do it! You could play 20 minutes a month and log over an hour for the challenge! I signed up… how about you?

Charlie got the new CatGenie hooked up today. No more litter scooping for me, yay! Not even dumping litter that was automatically scooped into a bin! This is the litter box to beat all litter boxes… it FLUSHES the waste after using a sanitizing solution to break it down into liquid form! It’s hooked up to the drain where my clothes washer is attached. Love it!

No doubt that Sarah is my child! Playing with their new LiteBrite, Hannah asks if a peg is yellow or green (they’re very similar in these pegs). I confirm that it’s green, and then I say that they could really use any color they want to make their pictures. Sarah says “But I want to use the RIGHT colors.” (i.e. the ones that the picture forms indicate should be used.)

That was just a little scary.

We went to a birthday party this afternoon for a friend who turned 5 years old today. It was at her grandparent’s home, where they have a small swimming pool, with a slide. The kids were having a great time swimming and going down the water slide. The shallow end was only up to Sarah’s chest, so after a while we allowed them to take off their floaties and come down the slide a few times. All was fine until Sarah came down the slide, popped up out of the water with her eyes closed and started bouncing - the wrong way. She assumed she was heading toward the shallow end, but was heading toward the deep end. And of course at that moment, none of the bigger kids were in that area, but instead were all down at the far end of the pool. She got just a little over where she could reach, but not over her head, but there were a few moments of adrenaline-filled panic where I just couldn’t think straight, trying to get our friend Frank to help her, trying to reach a pool noodle toward her, telling Hannah (who was on a kick board next to Sarah) to push her forward to where she could reach, when my friend Lauran jumped in and grabbed her. I couldn’t help crying, Sarah was crying, and I scraped all my toes when I was trying to reach her. I still don’t know why I didn’t just jump in and grab her myself. I’m so, so thankful Lauran could think straighter than me and pull her out. I had hoped to get them in swim lessons this summer, but we just didn’t have the money for it. *sigh*

It’s Fair time!

Shuttle ride to the fair gates: $1. Admission: $9. The look on your 6 yr old’s face when she meets Scooby Doo: priceless!

We had a great afternoon at the fair. Charlie had to work, so I took the kids late in the afternoon. They rode a few rides, we ate fair food, and my favorite part, we got to see Wynonna Judd in concert!

A new computer

My computer crashed. Dead. Just… poof. Black screen and it won’t boot back up. I took it to my friend that always checks out my computer and it is either the motherboard or the processor. Either way, we’ve been nickel-and-diming this computer to death, and it’s just time to get a new one. Glad we have a little bit of an emergency fund built up, and a boss that will chip in toward the new one so I can get a decent one!

She’s got such an engineering mind!

The girls were given a slip-n-slide for their birthday yesterday. They had fun for a little while using it on the lawn today. But the lawn is a little bumpy so it wasn’t easy or very comfortable for sliding. So I suggested we hook up a short slide we have (but have never used) that connects to a water hose and has holes at the top to make it a water slide. I had to step in the house for a minute, so I told Hannah to move the slide to where they could use it.

When I came back out, Hannah had the slide pointed at the starting point of the slip-n-slide. It was still wet, so when we turned on the slide, the slip-n-slide extended their slide length! They had great fun with that for the rest of the afternoon!

Birthday parties are fun!

Today was the big day! So far it’s still working well to have both girls’ birthday party together. It helps that they’re just under 2 years apart, and they have all the same friends from Sabbath School and our Homeschool group. We had around 20 of their friends join us at the spray park - even though I tried to keep it under a dozen, I just couldn’t help it! I wanted all their friends to come and play and celebrate with us. We had vegan cupcakes with vegan “cream cheese” icing that were a big hit (not a crumb left, and I made 40+ cupcakes), as well as homemade juice popsicles. I think all the kids had a great time playing in the water and at the playground. The girls are already asking when they get to have another party!
